Did you know that Google has found GPA’s and test scores to be “worthless as a criteria for hiring”

A fun fact you probably didn’t know about Google is the fact that the company likes hiring new staff members, who never went to college.

You might think you would need at least a college degree just to be able to become an intern at Google and at least a Master’s degree in order to actually work there. In that case you are terribly wrong, because the tech giant likes hiring new staff without any college degrees.



Laszlo Bock, the Senior Vice President for People Operations at Google, spoke out loud about the matter a few years ago. As it turned out, not only is Bock (who is a grad school alumna, mind you!) not a fan of higher education, but he also believes that staff members, who never went to college, make better engineers than the ones, who actually have a college degree. Bock stated that all the GPAs, the outstanding transcripts and the fancy diplomas don’t really guarantee that a person will do wonders for Google. In fact, the Senior VP is convinced that Google needs to hire more people without college degrees. His main argument is that a college student can deliver outstanding results in a specific environment only where the professor needs to hear an obvious answer. On the other hand, people, who have never went to college, can deliver outstanding results in more than one specific environment and they can come up with more than one brilliant answer, which isn’t obvious at all.

Bock shared that Google likes hiring staff without college degrees so much that there are even whole teams consisted of at least 14% of people, who never ever went to college. Or in other words, Google doesn’t care about your GPA score and about your shiny diploma as long as you provide outstanding results
